Maintaining An Indoor Fountain That Is Beautiful And Beneficial

Indoor water fountains are beautiful, beneficial and fun to have around. Unfortunately, if you don't tend to it properly, the moisture from the fountain can cause damage to your furniture, flooring and walls. Instead of being beneficial, the fountain then becomes a cause of concern as that moisture could lead to mold growth and if the water isn't cared for properly, bacteria issues. Here, you will find a few ways to ensure that your indoor fountain is nothing more than beautiful and beneficial.

Prevent Splashing

A few splashes here and there might not seem like anything to worry about, but the ones that you are ignoring could be the ones that cause the water damage to your furniture or promote mold growth. Instead of ignoring the splashing, find out why it is happening and make the necessary changes to stop it.

Adjust the Settings – Some fountains are equipped with water-speed settings. These settings tell the fountain how much water to send through the system each hour. Try lowering the setting to decrease the amount of water that is pushed through the system to decrease the splashing.

Move the Rocks – If the catch bin is filled with rocks, try moving the rocks around a bit. Stack them higher so that the water doesn't fall as far before it reaches them or lowering the stack so that the water doesn't hit the rocks and instead flows into the water held in the bin.

Check the Water Level – If you have too much, or not enough water in the fountain, splashing will occur. Look in the instruction manual to find out just how much water is supposed to be used for optimum performance. Sometimes, the fountain has a fill line to show you just how much to use.

Prevent Bacteria Growth

The water in your fountain can become the breeding grounds for bacteria if you don't take care of it properly. To prevent the growth of bacteria there are a few things that you can do.

Regular Cleanings – Clean your fountain weekly removing the water inside and replacing it with fresh, clean water. Use a toothbrush to scrub away any algae that may be present.

Use Distilled Water – Distilled water is cleaner than most tap water. Filling your fountain with the distilled water will eliminate a lot of the algae and bacteria problems that could arise.

Install UV Lights – UV lights are made to be used in the water catch bins in many fountains. These lights kill bacteria as the water flows over them and any algae that is forming will clump together to make it much easier to remove.
